Leadership Change at KUMC
In November 2011, Barbara Atkinson, M.D., announced that she would step out of the role of executive dean of University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Atkinson became dean in 2002 and was named executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2005.
Dr. Atkinson's announcement led to the formation of a search committee, which Edward Ellerbeck, M.D., chair of the department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, agreed to chair. The search committee's objective changed in April 2012, when Dr. Atkinson said she would retire from both positions earlier than planned. At the direction of Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, Ph.D., the search committee turned its attention to finding suitable candidates for the position of executive vice chancellor.
In the meantime, Steven Stites, M.D., is acting executive vice chancellor and executive dean. Dr. Stites, the Peter T. Bohan Professor and chair of the department of Internal Medicine has established transition teams in key areas to prepare for new leadership and to ensure that KUMC is ready to meet all challenges. A list of the transition team members can be found here. Last week, Dr. Stites reported that search committee has conducted telephone interviews with several candidates, both internal and external, and identified additional candidates through postings and the search firm. Committee chair, Dr. Ellerbeck, anticipates the committee will complete its preliminary interviews by the second week of June and hopes to bring prospective candidates to the medical center by early July. A list of the search committee can be found here.
