Tiles of Hope
A successful 2nd annual fundraiser in November provided a boost to this unique program merging arts and healing at the KU Cancer Center for individuals receiving blood and marrow transplantation. Providing a chance to express emotions through painting a tile, Tiles of Hope is led by students of KU's Occupational Therapy degree program under assitant professor Dr. Lisa Mische-Lawson. The tiles are then displayed in the transplant unit, giving hope and inspiration to those coping with serious illness. More info

Marc Fey, PhD (photo) Congratulations to Dr. Marc Fey for being chosen to receive the Honors of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Given for sustained and outstanding contributions to research, teaching and service to the profession, this is the highest award bestowed by the ASHA and will be presented to Dr. Fey at the Association's annual convention, November 2011.

recently received the "Clinical Excellence Award" from the International Association of Laryngectomees. The award recognizes outstanding promise and commitment to the clinical mission of the Association.
Pete Beyer (photo) Internationally known for his expertise in nutrition and gastrointestinal diseases, Pete Beyer, MS, RD, LD, announces his retirement. Beyer leaves a lasting impact on the students and faculty in the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition.

Occupational Therapy Students Honored
OT students Kendall Carithers and Sarah Salzman were recognized as KU Outstanding Graduates for "Tiles of Hope." Working with Dr. Mische-Lawson, the program brings volunteers and patients together to paint ceramic tiles during the long (and often boring) outpatient treatments at the KU Cancer Center. The tiles are then displayed in the transplant unit, giving hope and inspiration to those coping with serious illness. Read

Researchers Chertoff and Earl (photo)

School of Health Professions Researchers Recognized with Editor's Award

Mark Chertoff, PhD, associate professor in the KU Department of Hearing and Speech and Brian Earl, PhD, hearing and speech postdoctoral fellow, recently won the Editor's Award from Ear and Hearing for Most Outstanding Paper of the Year. Their research explores new diagnostic tests related to regeneration of hair cells in the inner ear and their associated auditory nerve fibers. Ear and Hearing is widely regarded as the most prestigious audiology journal in the world. Earl accepted the award at the annual convention of the American Auditory Society in Phoenix, Ariz.

KU Nurse Anesthesia Group Attends AANA Assembly

The Mid-Year Assembly of States provides an opportunity for nurse anesthesia students to develop expertise in federal legislative and regulatory issues and to learn about the legislative process. The event, hosted annually by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, included discussion in Federal health care programs, Medicare reimbursement and access the rural anesthesia. More

KU Students Recognized by KHIMA

Three KU Health Information Management students, Sumere Smith, Heidi Hale and Melissa Knight, have been awarded scholarships from the Kansas Health Information Management Association (KHIMA). The scholarship program offers recognition and financial assistance to outstanding students pursuing careers in the field of health information management.

HIM Graduate Helps Develop Clinical Database
Samantha Zarda, RHIA, worked to develop a clinical database which will house all patients for a renowed aortic surgeon at the Baylor College of Medicine. The project began during an internship and continued later as Zarda returned to take the position of database coordinator. Zarda graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in health information management. This database will serve as a critical tool from which data is extracted for scholarly publications, scientific presentations and other administrative purposes. More
