KU Faculty Member to be Inducted as AARC Fellow
Michael Czervinske, RRT-NPS, clinical instructor in the KU Department of Respiratory Care Education, has been selected as a Fellow of the American Association for Respiratory Care and will be formally inducted at the AARC's 58th International Respiratory Congress in New Orleans, La., on November 11, 2012. Nutrition Clinic opens at KU Medical Center
Bringing together researchers from the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition to serve the local community, the Nutrition Clinic officially opened on campus this summer. The new clinic features a highly specialized piece of equipment used measure body composition, the Bod Pod, and the only one currently available to the general public in the region.

Prestigous Award for Former Cyto Student
David Kress, 2012 graduate of KU's Cytotechnology program, has been awarded the Geraldine Colby Zeiler Award by the American Society of Cytopathology. Kress was one of only five students selected to receive the honor.
Sandra Billinger, PT, PhD, FAHA, has been appointed vice chairperson of the American Heart Association's Rehabilitation and Recovery Committee. This committee is part of the Stroke Council, one of 16 scientific councils within the American Heart Association uniquely dedicated to advancing the science of stroke prevention, treatment and recovery through research and education.
Dr. Billinger leads the Georgia Holland Research in Exercise and Cardiovascular Health laboratory located on the ground floor of the Hemenway Life Sciences building at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

Exercise Is Medicine 2012 a Success
KU Medical Center hosted the Exercise Is Medicine Conference May 18, 2012. More than 125 fitness experts, scientists, health care professionals and members of the local community joined KU to learn about the positive effects of physical activity and to promote the importance of exercise in the design of treatment plans for patients.
The School's May 12 Recognition Ceremony recognized graduating students with university honors and departmental honors.
PT Reaches Milestone
KU graduated its 100th class of physical therapy students May 12. Initially organized in 1943 as a response to the polio epidemic, the program has reached great heights in the areas of research and education.

Exercise is Medicine™ event with keynote speaker Michael J. Joyner, MD, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. This initiative focuses on encouraging primary health care providers to include exercise when designing treatment plans for patients.

Students from the school's Doctor of Audiology program participated in the
Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza April 28. In recognition of Better Hearing and Speech Month, they distributed earplugs and information to visitors while collecting donations of hearing aids for this summer's Medical Missions trip to Guatemala.

KU Researchers Present at APTA Event
Drs. Stehno-Bittel, VanHoose, Kluding and Sabus from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science presented at the 2012 Combined Sections Meeting in Chicago. The program, "Intellectual Property and Partnerships: The Value of Your Ideas," explained how they obtained funding and support for physical therapy programs and activities through industry relationships. The event is hosted each year by the American Physical Therapy Association. Read a summary (see page 4)
Student Research Honored at Capitol
A student in the PhD in Rehabilitation Science program, Jessica Witherspoon, was one of four graduate students at KU to be awarded a $500 award at the ninth annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit in Topeka, Kan. Her presentation was titled, "Shoulder Instability May Depend on Labral and Capsular Properties." Release

New Audiology Clinic to Help More Patients, Prepare Future Clinicians in Hearing Disorders
With the opening of the Hartley Family Audiology Center on the KU Edwards Campus, the audiology services program at KUMC can now reach an even greater number of people in the Kansas City region. The new clinic, located in Regnier Hall on the Edwards campus, is staffed by doctoral-level audiologists on faculty in the KU Department of Hearing and Speech.
