KU offers a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care academic program with the option to specialize in pulmonary rehabilitation, perinatology, adult critical care, management, education, sleep disorders, cardiopulmonary diagnostics, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

The KU Respiratory Care program was founded in 1968 and has received full accreditation since its implementation. The program was founded as a 6 month Technician training program which soon gave way to a 1 year post-Associate Degree Therapist level program. The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care was initiated in 1978 and was one of the first Respiratory Care BS programs. In 2001 planning and implementation was completed for an on-line BS completion program for RRT credentialed or eligible respiratory care practitioners in addition to our "on-site" BS and advanced standing BS completion programs.

The KU Difference

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers excellent teachers and hundreds of courses from which to choose electives. The science courses you'll take as prerequisites are similar, if not the same, as those required by the medical and nursing schools.

Professional Training

At the KU Medical Center, you will be exposed to the broad range of health-care problems in an urban setting. You'll study on the cutting edge of research and technology. During your clinical rotations, you'll be exposed to large and small health care facilities in the metropolitan area, each offering their own unique qualities and clinical experiences. Your clinical experiences will be broad and comprehensive. The practicums will allow you to experience the work place to refine those competencies usually not acquired until after graduation.

The Faculty

The faculty in the Department of Respiratory Care Education have 115+ years of combined experience in respiratory care combined. Few respiratory care programs have faculty with an average of 18 years of teaching experience. The faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Department of Respiratory Care Education is dedicated to developing students who have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the highest quality of patient care. Each student is given the opportunity to learn the theories of practice and to develop the competencies necessary to perform at the therapist level.
