Individuals who have experienced a stroke more than 3 months ago are invited to participate in a study aimed at improving function and quality of life. This program includes use of an innovative device to deliver an electrical stimulus to the muscles of the lower leg to help lift the foot during walking. This large clinical research space is shared by three principal investigators in the KU School of Health Professions: Dr. Patricia Kluding, Dr. Sandra Billinger and Dr. Debra Sullivan. The Georgia Holland Research Lab encompasses approximately 4000 square feet on the ground floor of the new Hemenway Research Building. Opening in 2007, this modern scientific facility includes a large waiting area, receptionist desk, faculty and research associate offices and a conference room. The smaller labs within this space – the HEAL lab, and the REACH lab – are designed to assess body composition, muscle strength and endurance, and aerobic fitness. Additionally, there is a large exercise intervention room that is newly furnished with LifeFitness and NuStep exerise equipment for aerobic and strength training.
