Complex Object Parametric Analyzer and Sorter (COPAS) PLUS Biosorter Instrument
(Union Biometrica, Holliston, MA)

These platforms are the only fully-automated systems for high throughput analysis, sorting, and dispensing of small model organisms, seeds, pollen, as well as "large" particles such as combinatorial chemistry beads. COPAS enables researchers to measure objects by optical signatures including density and size, and by the presence of fluorescent markers. Today, scientists are relying this equipment to answer demanding research questions without compromising the need for viability, purity, yield, or quantification.

The COPAS platform is designed for the in-flow measurement of objects ranging in size from 20 – 1500 microns. Each model features a specially engineered fluidic path and flow cell optimized for a specific subset of that size range to provide maximum speed, accuracy, and throughput depending on application. Most instruments can dispense objects either in bulk receptacles or multiwell plates.

Metabolic Modular Treadmill
(Columbus Instruments)

The Modular Treadmill encloses each animal within an isolated space. An exercise belt, associated pulleys, a fan to promote air movement and electric stimuli are enclosed in a compartment which is made air-tight. The addition of an indirect open circuit calorimeter to the compartment creates a complete system for the measurement of respiratory metabolic performance during animal exercise.

The system is constructed of master and slave units. A master unit incorporates an electric motor and speed controller to which one to seven additional slave units can be connected for exercising multiple animals. The incline of each animal compartment is individually adjustable in 5 degree increments. Electrical stimulus grids in each exercise lane can be activated manually by the operator. Intensity of electrical shock is also operator adjustable from 0.35mA to 1.5mA. LED lamps indicate which electrical stimulus grid is active.

    Features/Specifications:
  • One to eight isolated lane compartments
  • Lane compartments may be made air-tight
  • Can be used to measure animal oxygen consumption during exercise
  • Easily cleaned and maintained
  • Adjustable shock intensity

EcoOxymax Small Animal Calorimeter
(Columbus Instruments)

This is an indirect open circuit calorimeter designed to measure the metabolic performance of a single subject. The system monitors oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations by volume at the inlet and outlet ports of a chamber, canopy, tent, or mask through which a known flow of air is being forcibly ventilated. The difference in gas concentrations along with flow information is employed to calculate oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, respiratory exchange ratio and heat. All data provided by the Oxymax Eco is corrected to an STP of 0° and 760 mmHg. The system presents data in normalized forms that are user-defined.

The Oxymax Eco can be configured for positive or negative ventilation of a single subject. Flows between 100 mL/Min and 15,000 LPM are supported. The instrument supports all of the facilities of the Oxymax Equal Flow System with the limitation of working with only a single subject. The Oxymax Eco can be upgraded to support multiple subjects and provides a low cost entry into calorimetric measurements while providing the possibility of adding features to meet increasing demand.

    Features/Specifications:
  • Employs analytical grade gas sensors
  • Computer control and data collection
  • Economical system for single subject

SE 600 Ruby (dual-cooled gel electrophoresis unit)

The SE 600 Ruby vertical slab gel electrophoresis unit is intended for protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis under commonly used denaturing and non-denaturing conditions. Up to 28 samples can be compared on a single slab gel.

Applications include protein separations, nucleic acid fractionation, and the second-dimension separation of 2-D electrophoresis. First-dimension separation of 2-D protein electrophoresis is performed on Immobiline DryStrip Immobilized pH Gradient Gels using the IPGphor Isoelectric Focusing System. The focused strips are easily transferred to the second-dimension slab gel for size separation.

The gel plates are 18 cm wide by 16 cm long. Up to four gels can be run at one time if sandwiches are paired into "club sandwiches." The heat exchanger allows buffer temperature control in the lower chamber.
