Diabetes is a chronic condition, one which is steadily worsening in the U.S. To combat the devastating effects of the disease, scientists in the Diabetes Research Laboratory at the KU Medical Center, led by Lisa Stehno-Bittel – chair of the KU Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science – utilize a multi-disciplinary approach in order to better understand and engage the affliction. Through collaboration with chemical engineers, pharmacological chemists, MRI physicists and clinical endocrinologists, researchers in the Diabetes Research Laboratory are approaching the disease from every angle possible. By applying the science of physiology, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry and animal behavior, investigators are working to unlock the secrets of the seventh-leading cause of death in the country.
Several distinctive lines of research are taking place in the Diabetes Research Laboratory's two lab groups:
Funding
The Diabetes Research Laboratory receives funding from the National Institutes of Health (Center for Research Resources, Institute of General Medical Sciences, and Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Heart Association, US Department of Commerce, as well as private donations. We are extremely excited to have local organizations sponsoring our research. We are grateful to the Hall Foundation, Rosebud Diabetes Research Foundation, Diabetes Freedom Foundation, Kansas Eastern Star or Cosmopolitan Club of Overland Park for believing in us and helping us to make a difference.
