Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science

Research Labs

KU is regarded as one of the premier research institutions in the country and researchers in our department are at the forefront of advancing knowledge in health care. Students not only have the opportunity to learn from accomplished clinicians, but from individuals who are striving to expand our knowlegebase in a variety of health and science areas.

Brain Behavior Laboratory

Exploring the factors that influence motor skill learning, such as issues related to aging, damage to the brain, sleep and the type/amount of practice. Of particular interest is understanding how individuals with brain damage recover motor function and the underlying mechanisms that promote recovery.

Diabetes Research Laboratory

Scientists have combined a variety of expertise, such as physiology, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and animal behavior to unlock the secrets of diabetes.

Functional Performance Laboratory

Working to provide scientific evidence for developing best practices in the reduction of disability for adults with neurological deficits. Specifically, the lab is focused on determining what post-stroke motor control and cognitive deficits are not being revealed by standard clinical measures.

Georgia Holland Metabolic, Strength and Energy Laboratory

The major goal of ongoing research in this lab is to improve the health and wellness of people with chronic disease or disability.

Neuromuscular Research Laboratory

Focused on the neuro-motor control of movement, locomotion, and balance. Through the study of posture and gait disorders in post-stroke individuals, as well as those suffering from Parkinson’s disease, researchers are developing novel approaches and technologies in neuro-rehabilitation.
