Apply to the Molecular Biotechnology Program

Applications should be submitted by February 1 for first consideration.  Review of applications will continue beyond February 1 until all the available seats have been filled.  Students begin the program during the Fall semester only.  Applications to the program will be considered in accordance with the admission requirements of the KU School of Allied Health and the KU Office of Research and Graduate Studies.  Applicants should have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).  Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered for admission on probationary or provisional status. 

To apply for admission please carefully follow all instructions below to provide the required documentation on time.

STEP 1: Documents not provided directly by the applicant.
Contact the following agencies to request information be sent directly to the KU molecular biotechnology program:
  1. Arrange to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Your application cannot be completely processed until we have received these scores. Use institution code 6895 to have an official copy of your scores mailed directly to our office. The general exam must have been taken within the last two (2) years and include verbal, quantitative and analytical scores.

  2. Request to have one official copy of transcripts from every college and university that you have attended sent directly to the molecular biotechnology program.

  3. If English is a second language, applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Use institution code 6895 to have an official copy of your scores mailed directly to our office. A satisfactory score on the TOEFL must be obtained within the previous two (2) years (see guidelines for TOEFL).

  4. Three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals who can comment on your ability to successfully pursue graduate education. With your application materials, include the names and contact information for the individuals who will be sending these letters.
STEP 2: Documents provided by the applicant by mail.
  1. Complete the appropriate application form (use only one):

    M.S. in Molecular Biotechnology International Students
    M.S. in Molecular Biotechnology Non-Degree Seeking Students

    We suggest you complete the form by typing into the fields using your computer before printing them out. This will avoid delays caused by hand-written applications. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print the forms. Please complete all questions completely.

  2. An application fee of $60 (check payable to “University of Kansas Medical Center”).

  3. A one page personal statement that describes your educational goals and career objectives.
     
  4. A history of your research and work experience (or resume). Concluding with your present position, list your employment history and experience. Include all research and laboratory experience, even if you did not hold a paid position. Please list any honors or awards you may have received. Please list, in chronological order, the titles, authors, and complete references for any publications or abstracts on which your name appears.

Once your completed application has been received it will be reviewed by the admissions committee. Only complete applications will be reviewed.  All decisions regarding acceptance will be made as soon as possible, but no later than May. We strongly recommend students print and keep a copy of all application documents for their records.

International Students
Before completing these application materials, please review the Affidavit of Support to make sure you will be able to provide all necessary supporting documentation later on. All international students must complete an Affidavit of Support to establish that they have proof of funding for their studies and living expenses while attending classes at KUMC. The Affidavit and supporting documentation must be provided prior to the issuance of an I-20 or DS2019. Funding requirements are listed on the Affidavit of Support. If you are accepted into a program at KU, an International Student Advisor will contact you via email and request the Affidavit of Support. Note: Do not send this form with your application package.
