Admission to the Molecular Biotechnology Program

Prerequisites

Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree in a life science (e.g., Biochemistry, Biology, Cell Biology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biosciences etc.) or Chemistry prior to enrollment in the program.  An applicant with a baccalaureate degree in other than a life science can be considered for admission provided the prerequisite coursework has been successfully completed. 

Prerequisite courses include: General Chemistry (two semesters); Organic Chemistry lecture and laboratory (at least one semester); Biochemistry (one semester); Genetics (one semester); Cell biology (one semester); Calculus (one semester); Physics (one semester).  Applicants can be working towards completion of a baccalaureate degree at the time of application, but must have completed their degree requirements before enrolling in the program.

Application 

Applications should be submitted by March 1 for first consideration.  Review of applications will continue beyond March 1 until all the available seats have been filled.  Students begin the program during the Fall semester only.  Applications to the program will be considered in accordance with the admission requirements of the KU Graduate School.  Applicants should have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).  Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered for admission on probationary or provisional status. 
To apply for admission:

  1. Complete the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) Graduate Studies application form.  Domestic and international application forms may be accessed through the KUMC Graduate Studies Office at: http://www2.kumc.edu/aa/gradstudies/grad_adm.htm
  2. Submit the KUMC Graduate Studies application form and the following materials to the CLS Graduate Director.
    1. One copy of your official college transcripts
    2. A copy of your GRE scores and percentiles (verbal, quantitative, and analytical tests - taken within the last two years)
    3. Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can comment on your ability to successfully pursue graduate education.  With your application materials, include the names and contact information for the individuals who will be sending these letters.
    4. A one page personal statement that describes your educational goals and career objectives. 
    5. A history of your research and work experience (or resume).  Concluding with your present position, list your employment history and experience. Include all research and laboratory experience, even if you did not hold a paid position.  Please list any honors or awards you may have received.  Please list, in chronological order, the titles, authors, and complete references for any publications or abstracts on which your name appears.
    6. If you are an international student, request an official copy of your TOEFL score to be sent to the CLS Graduate Director. The TOEFL score cannot be more than 2 years old. 
    7. An application fee of $60 (checks make out to the “KUMC School of Allied Health”).

Once your completed application has been received it will be reviewed by the admissions committee. Only complete applications will be reviewed.  All decisions regarding acceptance will be made as soon as possible, but no later than May.
