Health Information Management Programs at KU

Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management
The University of Kansas offers a two-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management. The student learns theory and practice to attain entry-level competencies related to health records in management, personnel administration, legal aspects, health information systems, information retention and retrieval systems, health statistics, research, quality improvement systems, and classification and indexing systems.

The program begins each fall when a maximum of 24 students enter their first semester of professional coursework on the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kan. The program culminates in a 4-week capstone professional experience at the end of the spring semester of the senior year. The program is approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education.

After graduation, the student becomes eligible to sit for the American Health Information Management Association National Registry Examination that allows the successful candidate to be officially recognized as a Registered Health Information Administrator and utilize the RHIA credential after their name.

Students on the Lawrence campus interested in this program should declare pre-health information management as their major. They also must contact the Health Information Management department for assignment to an adviser.

Registered Health Information Technician
Progression Program

The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Progression Program is designed specifically for RHITs who already hold an associate's degree in health information technology and want to advance to a bachelor's degree in health information administration. The Progression Program takes the RHIT's knowledge a step further by focusing on all aspects of management within health information, which includes management of a department, a budget, staff, systems, databases, confidentiality and reimbursement.

This program is completely online and there is no on-campus requirement. The flexibility of online learning allows RHIT professionals to continue working while furthering their education. Although it is a rigorous track, it is one that will enhance students’ knowledge both academically and professionally.

Because the curriculum is designed to build on existing HIT knowledge, some courses are not required and others are available for challenge exams. Please contact the admissions coordinator with questions about transferring of courses and possible academic plans. Note: Students who have current coding credentials are not required to take the two Coding courses.

Joint Bachelor of Science/Masters Program
The joint Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management/Master of Health Services Administration Program (BSHIM/MHSA) is offered through the Department of Health Policy and Management in association with the Department of Health Information Management at the University of Kansas. By participating in the intensive, full-time bridge program, students can achieve both degrees in five years. HIM students who are interested in the BSHIM/MHSA bridge program must apply to the bridge during their Junior year, spring semester, so that they are admitted to the Masters portion of the program prior to their Senior year in the Bachelor of Science program.

Students pursuing the BSHIM/MHSA option will be prepared to assume management and executive positions in health-related organizations (e.g., hospitals, managed care organizations, health information system developers and vendors, and pharmaceutical companies) and to bring their expertise in health information management to these positions.

Students do not apply to the School of Allied Health for this program. For advising and program information including applications and requirements please visit the BSHIM/MHSA bridge program page.
