How does the RHIT-Progression Program work?
Although online courses offer flexibility, this is not a self-paced correspondence course. The online courses are offered at the same time as the on-campus semester-based courses with the same assignments, tests, expectations and timeframes. Courses are offered through an online course delivery system, which you access through the internet. You also need to have the following software, which may be purchased through
myKUMC portal: MS Office Professional 2007 & Visio Standard 2007.
Along with the online courses, you will be required to complete up to two Professional Practice Experiences and a Management Internship or Capstone Project such as a Senior Thesis. Since most students are already in the workplace, they have been able to integrate their assignments into their own work experiences.
Is on-line learning as effective as traditional learning?
Yes. The difference between the two is that online learning is an asynchronous form of education. It does not depend upon time or place. The online student must be self-disciplined and self-motivated in order to complete courses. The content of the course is the same & the expectations are the same. An online course requires a high level of motivation and participation.
What resources will I have?
Aside from your ANGEL access, you will be given a KUMC email account. You will also have online access to KUMC Dykes Library and the KUMC Bookstore. Textbooks may be ordered directly from the KUMC Bookstore & delivered to you. Your main point of contact will be the Distance Education Coordinator at the HIM Program. And, of course, your fellow students will also be a resource for you.
How many hours do I need to graduate?
A minimum of 124 academic credit hours are required to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Kansas. You need to enter the program with approximately 63 hours of required prerequisites and electives & the remaining HIA coursework is completed online.
How long is a student allowed to stay in the RHIT-Progression Program?
The program may be completed in either 2 years (full-time) or 4 years (part-time), but no more than 5 years.
What is the application deadline for the RHIT-Progression Program?
All parts of the application must be completed and received by the program by July 1 for fall enrollment.
What are the admission requirements?
Please refer to Admission Requirements, which are the same for both academic programs.
