Health Information Management
Program History
Health Information Management was formerly known as "Medical Record Administration" and accepted its first three students in 1971. At that time, the program was a post-baccalaureate certificate. In 1974, the department, Medical Records Administration Education, joined the new School of Allied Health as one of nine charter members. The program transitioned in the late 1970s to an

undergraduate degree program and the first Bachelor of Science students graduated in 1978. The degree required three years of undergradute study followed by 12 months of courses in health information management.
Mrs. Sue Malone was department chairperson from 1980 to 1995 and was followed by Mrs. Alice Junghans. Mr. Don Kellogg chaired the program from 2000 to 2002, and that May the last class of students from the 12-month program graduated. Since then, the health information management curriculum has been a 24-month program preceded by two years of undergraduate prerequisites. Today, the department is chaired by Mr. Karl Koob.

The mission of the KU Department of Health Information Management is to educate and prepare progressive and highly qualified professionals who provide leadership in diverse global healthcare and business information environments while promoting excellence in Health Information Management.

The KU Department of Health Information Management strives to be a premier academic program providing advance knowledge through academics, professional development, research, and technology in a global healthcare/business environment to meet the needs of all communities of interest.
