Dietetics and Nutrition

Mr. Beyer currently teaches Applied Clinical Nutrition (DN 826) and special topics in nutrition. He has over 40 years experience in clinical dietetics with 20 years as clinical nutrition manager and more than 35 years experience in education and research.  

Academic Background
Mr. Beyer was awarded a Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Missouri in 1974 and performed his dietetic internship in 1968 at the VA Center West Los Angeles, Calif. Professional Background
Mr. Beyer has received numerous awards from national and regional professional associations and universities including:  American Dietetic Association, Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year (1972); Distinguished Teaching Award, SAH, University of Kansas Medical Center (1986);  Excellence in the Practice of Clinical Nutrition, American Dietetic Association (1988); Outstanding dietitian of the year Kansas City Dietetic Association (1990); American Dietetic Association Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award 1996;  Alumni of the Year award, Central Missouri State University (1998); Medallion Award, American Dietetic Association (2001); Honorary Alumnus Award School of Allied Health, University of Kansas Medical Center (2003); University of Kansas, “Graduate Teaching Award”, Center for Teaching Excellence (2005).

Throughout his career he has been involved in many professional committees at the national, regional and local level including Chair of Quality Assurance committee, American Dietetic Association, Chair, Commission on Dietetic Registration,  Delegate to the American Dietetic Association 3, 3-year terms, Standards of Professional Practice Task force, ADA Ethics Committee, ADA Specialization committee, Editorial board, American Dietetic Association, Editorial board, Nutrition in Clinical Practice, ADA Fellow assessment committee, Original member Nutrition Care Process Committee, ADA.

Research Focus
Beyer's primary research interests include the role of diet and nutrition in gastrointestinal disorders and applied clinical nutrition in general. He has published approx. 35 refereed manuscripts, and 18 chapters in 7 different nutrition textbooks. He has also been invited to make over 250 presentations at national and regional nutrition and medical conferences and presented approximately 50 abstracts and posters at national meetings.
