Health professionals weigh in on the calcium supplementation cardiovascular risk debate: cardiologists, endocrinologists, vitamin D researchers and registered dietitians.


The 2010 KU Clinical Nutrition Seminar presented by the KU Department of Dietetics and Nutrition in collaboration with Mid-America Cardiology, KU School of Medicine, the Department of Internal Medicine, and Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Genetics.

  1. Investigate whether calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular events
  2. Consider the difficulty in attaining optimal vitamin D status through food sources
  3. Discuss the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Study Panel recommendations on how to interpret supplemental calcium intake and increased risk of cardiovascular events
  4. Theorize the mechanism by which vitamin D supplementation can be cardiovascular risk protective
