The average human body temperature is 98.6 degrees F (37 degrees Celsius). Deviation from this temperature results in basic physiological responses to thermal stress. These  include:
  • Shivering to increase body heat through mechanical contraction of muscles.
  • Lethargy to slow the body and reduce the mechanical contraction of muscles slowing heat production.
  • Sweating.

Heat and cold stress disorders and thermoregulation within the human body will be covered in greater detail later in this review.
