PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Eric Wenger, CIH

September 2002

I wish to extend my "official" congratulations to Dianna Bryant, Vicki Bender, and Geoff Smith on being selected by their peers to lead and represent our local AIHA section!  Your election shows that our membership has placed their confidence in you to guide our organization into the future.  Your new officer duties began May 1st, and continue through April 30th for the 2002-2003 administrative year.

Being an officer of a volunteer organization can sometimes be challenging and there are no monetary rewards.  As I learned in the National AIHA leadership-training seminar last winter, volunteer organizations must emphasize appreciation and they must strive to provide a sense of meaningful accomplishment to those who volunteer their time.  I hope that we can remember to emphasize this attitude for each other as well as for those we recruit for our section's committees and other volunteer work.

We say farewell to Allen Iske who has initiated several practices that I plan to continue, including convening an executive officers' planning session prior to each scheduled local section meeting.  Allen has also been very diligent in keeping the officers interconnected through e-mail, which I intend to continue.  I think that communicating and being well organized are keys to having a successful local section.  Allen Iske and Lance Erickson have certainly done an excellent job of teaching me these lessons.

Fortunately, Lance continues with us in his new role as "experienced advisor" to help guide us in the overall direction of our section.  Lance is a hard worker, has imagination and foresight, and is an invaluable resource for our section.  I know that I will be seeking his reasoned advise often and I hope that others in our section will too.

After two years as secretary, Scott has kindly accepted to continue by helping our new secretary, Vicki Bender, in managing our section's web site.  At this Spring’s Conference, our web-site received the National AIHA award and $100.00 for the best local web-site out of all other sections in our membership size category!  This reflects the past work of Janelle Thelen, Nick Huser, Chris Warholic, and Scott Cogbill.  Having Scott continue with the web site is a major "plus" for our section as it will allow Vicki to focus her efforts in tackling the other tasks as secretary.  Thank you Scott for your willingness to continue helping in such a vital role.

Geoff's return as Treasurer will definitely provide added stability.  Geoff has been very dedicated to our section and has done a great job of keeping our books.  Thanks for your work this past year.

Thank you to all who have served this past year in the furtherance of the Industrial Hygiene profession.

I look forward to working with Dianna and Vicki and I'm sure they will do wonderfully in their new roles.  We will seek leaders for our committees and our officers will need to contact volunteers.

My primary goal for the year is to increase our membership.  Key to this goal is to provide practical advantages for Industrial Hygienists in being a local section member.  I will look forward to serving as your president this year.
