PRESIDENT’S CORNER:

President’s Message

April 1, 2004

Mid America AIHA

President’s Message

This has been a great year for me, as President of this organization.  We have shared some great programs and an outstanding Technical Field trip.  Wes and I learned a lot at the AIHA Leadership Workshop and feel prepared to guide this organization during the next couple of years.

Four issues have arisen during the last year that we would like some feedback about.

1.    As national AIHA members you have received notices about the Teleweb courses.  These are now available on CD-ROM and can be used as a professional development program for our local section at a reasonable cost, and at a more convenient time and location.  We would like to know if you would be interested in attending a 2-3 hour program, most likely a daytime schedule including a meal.  We would need to charge about $40 to cover the meal cost and the cost of the materials.  Would you attend something like this?  After submission of a completed exam the attendee receives 0.5 CM points.  This is the same points as attending three regular dinner meetings.

2.    Mary and Tom Murphy memorial.  I propose that we name our bi-annual symposium the Tom and Mary Murphy Occupational and Environmental Health Symposium.  I would also propose that a share of the profit from this event be used to fund student attendance at local section meetings.  This would provide an additional opportunity to memorialize Tom and Mary by announcing at each meeting students in attendance.  Do you feel that this is an appropriate memorial?  Would you be willing to serve on a committee that would plan this event?

3.    Incorporation.  AIHA strongly recommends that we incorporate to limit the liability of officers to actions taken on behalf of the section.  This requires that we identify a corporate registration address (can’t be a P.O. Box).  This action does not require the services of an attorney and is easily done with information on each state’s Secretary of State web page.  Should the officers begin this process?

4.    Adding a Board of Directors to the elected offices of our local section.  Many other local sections have a Board of 3-5 members that serve a 3 year term.  This provides for some continuity of operations.  Board members serve in an advisory capacity and may chair committees or have other duties.  Long range planning might be a function of the Directors.

These are a few ideas that I would like to discuss very briefly at the April 13 meeting.  I am also happy to exchange email on any of these topics.  Also if you feel there are other issues that the officers should be working on please provide us with your recommendations.

Dianna Bryant, CIH, CSP

President, Mid America AIHA

 ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Mid-America local section of the AIHA is pleased to announce the new
officers for the 2004-2005 program year.  We had nearly 60% of the
ballots returned during the recent election, which is a nice increase.
Thank you all for participating.  The results, as announced at our
recent April meeting, and confirmed by the nomination committee (Lance
Erickson, Ken Grist, and myself) are:

President-Elect:   Joe Lohkamp

Secretary:            George Popov

Treasurer:            Vicki Bender

And of course, our returning officers for next year include:
Wes Cochran, who will move into the President's position, and
Dianna Bryant, who will become the immediate Past-President.

Congratulations to all the officers.  They are an outstanding
leadership group and are interested in the needs of our membership!  As
President, Dianna has given us some new ideas this past year which I
think will strengthen our section over the next couple years. I've
enjoyed my time serving our local section and look forward to continuing
to participate.

All those in the West half of Missouri and the East half of Kansas
practicing Industrial Hygiene in some manner should be a member of the
local AIHA section.   Encourage others to join and participate, or renew
your commitment to help the section by your attendance.   This is your
group for the  promotion, advancement,  and encouragement of Industrial
Hygienists!
Have a great summer!
