About KUMC Faculty Awards

The Office of Faculty Affairs is managed out of the KUMC Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies Office and oversees all three schools: Health Professions,Medicine and Nursing. This page is aimed at providing a directory or information about all awards presented to faculty members in any of the three schools, by either their respective school, the medical center or the university. Click on the name of the award below for additional information and specific details, including the nomination process, required materials, etc.

All-KUMC Awards

  • Faculty Award for Scholarship in Community Engagement
    • Purpose: For excellence in developing, implementing and sustained regional scholarship initiatives
    • Deadline: March 1, 2018
    • Eligibility: All FT/PT KMC faculty at KC, Wichita or Salina campuses
    • Award: $5000

  • EVC Diversity and Inclusion Award
    • Purpose: Recognizes significant achievements of faculty, staff, departments, units, and registered organizations toward developing and enhancing a more culturally diverse, competent and inclusive university community
    • Deadline: Nominations may be submitted January 23-February 17, 2018. 
    • Eligibility: KUMC-employed faculty, staff or enrolled students, who have advanced diversity and inclusion at KUMC.
    • Award: Recognition at the Diversity & Inclusion ceremony, typically held in the late Spring

  • Chancellor's Club Teaching Professorship
    • Purpose: To recognize sustained excellence in teaching and are awarded only to persons who have demonstrated outstanding teaching competence over an extended period of years. Recipients hold these chairs, which carry an annual stipend, for as long as they remain active as teachers and full-time faculty members at KUMC.  
    • Deadline: Dependent on vacancies, typically Spring 2018
    • Eligibility: Full-time faculty (rank of associate professor or higher) with at least 10 years of outstanding teaching at KUMC.
    • Award: $10,000 yearly stipend

  • Chancellor's Club Research Award
    • Purpose: To recognize exceptional achievements that have had significant and long-term impact on a research field
    • Deadline: March 31, 2018
    • Eligibility: All faculty who have held appointments at KUMC for at least four years
    • Award: $10,000

  • Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) AwardsBetty Drees, MD Distinguished Alumnae Award; Amy O'Brien-Ladner MD Innovation AwardRobert M. Klein, PhD Trailblazer AwardRising Star AwardMajorie S. Sirridge, MD Excellence in Medicine and Science AwardSoaring Star Award; Patricia A. Thomas, MD Diversity & Inclusion Award
    • Purpose: Varies by award, but generally, to honor the accomplishments of women faculty/non-faculty and to recognize those who help to promote the careers of women faculty/staff.
    • Deadline: May 1, 2018
    • Applications for the Majorie S. Sirridge, MD Excellence in Medicine and Science Award will be accepted in 2018.
    • Eligibility: Varies by award, recognition at WIMS banquet in August
    • Award: Varies

  • Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award
    • Purpose: To recognize and reward demonstrated teaching ability of a clearly superlative nature
    • Deadline: March 30, 2018
    • Eligibility: Paid (non-volunteer) faculty who contribute to the University and its students through excellence and outstanding classroom teaching
    • Award: $1000

  • Glendon G. Cox Leadership Award
    • Purpose: To honor a member of the KUMC academic medical community as a leader and to recognize contributions made in an extraordinary fashion and at a consistently high level over a span of many years.
    • Deadline: TBD, typically July 
    • Eligibility: Any faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center campuses have provided leadership in the education of patient care professionals, health care delivery, and/or service in the School of Health Professions, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the hospital and/or other healthcare settings.
    • Award: $1500

  • Faculty Research Investigator Award
    • Purpose: To recognize and honor significant research accomplishments by the faculty of the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Salina and Wichita.
    • Deadline: August 1, 2018
    • Eligibility: These awards are given to investigators who display evidence of significant research accomplishments and a high potential for sustained productive research in the future. Faculty who have had appointments at the University of Kansas Medical Center or School of Medicine Salina and Wichita for at least 2 years are eligible
    • Award: Multiple winners are possible - $1000 per award. Awards presented at the Faculty Research Day in the Fall.

  • Research Grant Administrator Award
    • Purpose: Recognizes and honors significant administrative support to the research enterprise of KUMC and Wichita. These awards are given to research support administrators who have evidence of their significant support to research accomplishments and a high potential for sustained productive research support in the future.
    • Deadline: August 1, 2018
    • Eligibility: Any KUMC, Kansas City, Salina, or Wichita based department (basic or clinical), or School level classified or unclassified full time staff member who assists faculty in proposal development and/or post award grant management is eligible for this award.
    • Award: Multiple winners are possible - $350 per award. Awards presented at the Faculty Research Day in the Fall.

  • KUMC Alumni Awards (Distinguished Alumni, Early Career Achievement, Honorary Alumni)

School of Medicine Faculty Awards

  • Ruth Bohan Teaching Professorship
    • Purpose:  The award recognizes excellence in teaching and seeks to continue the tradition of outstanding education in the medical school.
    • Deadline: TBD, typically May 1
    • Eligibility: School of Medicine faculty member who displays 1) exceptional quality of intellectual content; 2) innovation and quality of teaching practices; 3) depth and breadth of student understading; 4) reflective consideration and development; 5) inspiration and role/mentor; 6) exceptional dedication to students and the profession.
    • Award: $5000 (two awards given each year)

  • Executive Dean's Distinguished Mentoring Awards (Lifetime Achievement Mentoring Award - "The Jayhawk"; Excellence in Mentoring Award; Honorary Mentoring Award; Achievement Award for Mentoring Residents; Achievement Award for Mentoring Post-docs)
    • Purpose: To recognize faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to mentoring the School's junior faculty, residents and post-doctoral students. Nominated by their colleagues and learners, the Distinguished Mentoring Awards are given to deserving individuals who recognize the vital role that mentoring plays in developing the next generation of medical educators.
    • Deadline: TBD, typically July 14
    • Eligibility: Varies by award
    • Award: $1500, recognition and the Annual SOM Faculty Retreat, recognition on the Distinguished Mentor Wall in the School of Medicine

School of Health Professions Faculty Awards

  • Stata Norton Distinguished Teaching Award
    • Purpose: This award recognizes one faculty member in the School each year who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. 
    • Deadline: March 31, 2018
    • Eligibility: Any School of Health Professions voting faculty member
    • Award: $3500, plaque award and recognition at the SHP Student Recognition Ceremony

  • Lou Loescher-Junge Service Award
    • Purpose: The award is given annually to one faculty or staff member in the KU School of Health Professions who has consistently demonstrated exceptional abilities to serve, inspire and lead with broad impact at both the school, university, and/or community level.
    • Deadline: August 15, 2018
    • Eligibility: SHP faculty or staff member
    • Award: $1500

School of Nursing Faculty Awards

  • Karen L. Miller Visionary Award
    • Purpose: The Karen L Miller (KLM) Visionary Leadership Award shall be used to provide an award to a qualified School of Nursing faculty member who demonstrates visionary, innovative leadership related to teaching, research or practice that could include but is not limited to an interprofessional focus. This award is in recognition of the innovative, vision and leadership provided by Dean Karen L. Miller during her tenure as Dean of the School of Nursing.
    • Deadline: March 31, 2018
    • Eligibility: School of Nursing faculty member
    • Award: $1500

  • MacArthur Research Grant Award
    • Purpose: The MacArthur Collaborative Practice Award is made to enhance the research efforts of faculty members in the School of Nursing and the School of Medicine. The purpose is to provide funding to an interdisciplinary team at KUMC conducting research related to collaborative practices between nurses and physicians.  Previous winners are eligible to apply for these funds.
    • Deadline: November 1, 2018; if no applications a second call is sent for March 1, 2019
    • Eligibility: School of Nursing Faculty member must be the PI for the study; Previous winners are eligible to apply for these funds.
    • Award: $5,000-10,000

    • Sponsorship: Dr. Richard MacArthur and Barbara MacArthur
  • Phyllis Keeney Lawrence Award
    • Purpose: The award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates a superior record of teaching performance, makes significant contribution to curriculum development, and utilizes innovative approaches in teaching. The faculty member chosen will receive the award at the School of Nursing Recognition Ceremony in May as well as a monetary gift that accompanies this award.
    • Deadline: March 1, 2018; nomination file due March 30, 2018
    • Eligibility: Nursing faculty member with superior record of teaching performance, a significant contribution to curriculum and other program development and/or course improvement and innovative teaching approaches. 
    • Award: $5000

  •  Jean Johnson Research Grant Award
    • Purpose: The Jean Johnson Research Development Award is  made to enhance the research efforts of faculty members in the School of Nursing.  The purpose is to (a) support pilot projects, instrument development, or other initial research efforts; or (b) cover research expenses that exceed  the funding for an ongoing study.
    • Deadline: December 1, 2017; if no applications a second call is sent for April 1, 2018
    • Eligibility: School of Nursing Faculty Members; Previous winners are eligible to apply for the funds.
    • Award: $1500
