The pressure/time waveform in relation to the PIP limit allows quick and easy visualization of the presence of pressure limiting and to what extent.
Flow/time can also be displayed and provides a visual guide to refining inspiratory time and flowrate settings. Inspiratory times that are too short can be identified. The IT can be lengthened to maximize volume delivery and mean airway pressures. With a longer IT, flowrates may be lower without reducing tidal volumes. The PIP limit could then be reduced accordingly.
If there is a long gap between the point in time when inspiratory flow returns to baseline and the start of exhalation, the inspiratory time can be shortened. A slight gap is desirable. The tidal volume should be monitored and kept in the desired range.
