Overview:KU Medical CenterThe University of Kansas Medical Center is part of the University of Kansas. The University of Kansas is one of six public universities in the state of Kansas that are governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. The Medical Center has been at its current location since 1924. In that year, the Bell Memorial Hospital moved from its original location in Rosedale to the current location at 39th & Rainbow Blvd. The original hospital building now houses mainly administrative offices. The current KU Hospital opened in 1979. The hospital has approximately 850,000 square feet of floor space. The KU Medical Center complex as a whole covers over 50 acres with over 35 buildings and more than 4,700 employees. The Medical Center remains a center for innovation in patient care and continues to grow. Two recent examples of this growth are the new buildings for the School of Nursing and the Center on Aging. There are over 2,400 students enrolled in the schools of medicine, nursing, allied health as well as graduate studies. The Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences is one of 10 departments in the School of Allied Health. The other 9 departments are: Biometry, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Cytotechnology, Dietetics & Nutrition, Hearing & Speech, Health Information Management, Nurse Anesthesia, Occupational Therapy and Respiratory Care. Physical therapy is a graduate program in addition to being in the School of Allied Health.
