Template for the Disorder Summaries

These summaries are intended to help students recognize and utilize resources available to them through traditional sources (library, journals) and more recent technologies (web-based sites, news groups). They also are intended to encourage students to become familiar with perspectives from the the academic, clinical, and research domains - and to consider the relative merits of information gathered from different sources.

You will need to submit three completed disorder summaries by 4pm on November 25th.

Each student will be responsible for summarizing essential aspects of three different disorders related to nervous system function. You must choose one disorder from the list provided on-line as part of this course's webpages. The remaining two (or more!) are to be selected from another source, such as the list of disorders related to the nervous system or Fact Sheets maintained by the Society for Neuroscience (www.sfn.org), or the searchable list of conditions maintained by the Dana Alliance (www.dana.org; look for the green sidebox titled 'Brain Health Condition Center').

I've already developed a Multiple Sclerosis summary as an example for you to follow - please do not select MS as one of your three choices!

Note that the summaries should be written from a neuroscience perspective rather than that of therapist; this means that it isn't sufficient to describe functional limitations - you must discuss the neuroscience features contributing to these functional issues.

You may discuss aspects of this assignment among yourselves, but this is not a group project! Each student is to complete the thee summaries independently. Because each of you will be graded as an individual, you alone are responsible for the final outcome.

Outlines must be typed, 1-2 pages in length (not longer!) and follow a standard format. To help all students conform to the same format, a template for these Summaries may be downloaded and completed using your word processor. Save the result in MSWord (.doc) or Rich Text (.rtf) format and submit the files electronically. Be sure that filename includes your name and the disorder (for instance, "Radel_MS.doc", "Radel_ParkDis.rtf"), so that we may credit you properly with having submitted the assignments.

These summaries will contribute a total of 15% (3 x 5%) to your course grade.

Format for the Disorder Summaries

You may download a copy of this template as an electronic file, and complete it using your own word processor. Simply follow the directions appropriate to your needs.

Look over an example: Multiple Sclerosis.

  1. Disorder: identify the proper name and any common names or acronyms for the disorder
  2. Definition
provide a short description of the disorder
  3. Epidemiology
Is there a particular age, race, or sex that is more affected by this disorder? How prevalent is the disorder?
  4. Pathology
  5. Clinical picture
  6. Prognosis
  7. Associated disorders, conditions or complications:
  8. References:
Citations for the materials you have used while compiling the information in this outline.
  9. Potential Interventions: OPTIONAL! You may complete this section, but it will not be graded as part of this assignment.
