Practice questions

Throughout this term, we occasionally will use this page to post practice questions and case studies for you to work through. These are offered as study aids, to help you to develop strategies for critical thinking and problem solving when confronted by novel clinical situations. We suggest you work with other students, explaining your own answers and reasoning behind that answer. As you work through the questions, attempt to frame your answers so they address:
  1. The behavioral symptom(s) likely to be reported by the person (e.g., I get dizzy when I stand up.)
  2. The clinical assessment(s) you might use to evaluate the problem (e.g., rotary chair testing, caloric stimulation of the vestibular system; nystagmus)
  3. The probable neurological site(s) contributing to the problem (e.g., excessive activity of vestibular receptors).

Hypothalamus and ANS

This is a practice question for our Hypothalamus and ANS material.

Spinal Cord

These are practice questions for the Spinal Cord material.

Brain Stem

These are practice questions for the Brain Stem & Cranial Nerves material.

Sensory Systems

These are practice questions for the Sensory Systems (the somatosensory, proprioceptive, vestibular, auditory, and visual systems).

Motor Output Systems

These are practice questions for neural systems related to Motor Output (the thalamus, cerebellum, basal ganglia, and somatic motor system).

Cortex Review

These are possible answers for the review questions at the end of your course packet.

End-of-Term Case Studies

You will be asked to draw two terms from a hat, then develop two separate fictional (but accurate) case studies illustrating behavioral and clinical features relating to these terms. Students will then exchange cases studies and each student then will attempt to determine the neurological basis of the new case studies they have received. Here are more detailed instructions.
