NOTE: Students bear sole responsibility for meeting certain deadlines in the OCTH 790 course; these deadlines are stated in the OCTH 790 course timetable. Should a situation arise that precludes meeting a deadline, students must contact the instructor and discuss options prior to that deadline!
Guidelines for progress:
The nature of research investigations is such that not all research projects will progress at the same rate, and students working on different projects should not necessarily expect to be in the same stage of their investigations at the same time. The instructors are aware of these factors and have suggested the dates below as guidelines. DO NOT stray too far from these guidelines; the final product is a cumulative effort and seldom can be completed successfully without prior steady progress throughout the semester. You should meet with the instructors to discuss concerns about your progress, and you should do so earlier rather than later in the semester!
November: Descriptions of potential research projects are distributed
December: Students select and prioritize three research projects from the list of potential projects. Based on these choices teams are formed, projects are assigned. Student teams may begin to meet with research mentor(s).
January: Students begin to learn the basics of research in lectures, and meet with mentors during the 1st week of classes to begin the literature review for their research project, initiate data collection, and begin working on their projects.
Feb - March: Students pursue data collection and continue to meet with mentors as is warranted by their project. The Introduction and Methods sections of the research paper are written. Data analysis begins and the Results, Discussion, References, and Appendix sections of the research paper are outlined.
April: Data analysis is completed early in the month. The Results, Discussion, References, and Appendix sections of the research paper are completed by mid-month. Assemble the edited subsection of the report and submit the document to KU's Writing Center for comments. Save a copy of these comments! If there are plans to publish the study, students and mentors should clarify these plans (see "Policies on Ownership of Data" in your course packet).
May: Student groups will submit two copies of the group's final research report and one copy of the Writing Center's comments, along with all raw data they have collected. Each research group will make oral presentations of their research projects on Research Day, during Finals Week. There is no final exam in this course!
