Description of Assignments

  1. KUMC Compliance testing
    Completed certificates documenting 1) successful compliance testing and 2) conflict of interest disclosure will be required before you can take part in any research activities.
    1. All individuals affiliated with the KU Medical Center who are involved with conducting research MUST receive certification in Human Subjects Protection BEFORE initiating subject recruitment or data collection. You are required to complete the web-based tutorial and accompanying certification quiz regarding the protection of human subjects. Following satisfactory completion of this quiz, you need to submit two (2) copies of the printed certificate to the OCTH 790 instructor.
    2. All individuals affiliated with the KU Medical Center who are involved with conducting research MUST ALSO complete a Conflict of Interest disclosure. Please provide one (1) completed copy of this form to the OCTH 790 course instructor. Remember to sign the final page of the form!
    3. The Human Subjects Protection tutorial and test and the Conflict of Interest Disclosure form may be access by selecting this link or through the "Training" link on your myKUMC page.

  1. Concept map
    This is a visual representation of the sections of your final written document. It is a method of graphing knowledge. It provides a guide for building your paper that follows logical and acceptable formatting to guide writing. There are several formats available online, or you may create your own. Here is a web-based resource to assist with concept mapping: http://users.edte.utwente.nl/lanzing/cm_home.htm. (20 points)
  2. Literature search #1
    This literature search will consist of at least 10 research-based scientific articles. They will be summarized on a reference page (A.P.A. style), and all of the literature search terms and the actual computer results will be attached to the reference page. (30 points)
  3. Introduction
    This section must provide a thesis sentence, background, significance and a template for the sections of your paper utilizing correct grammar, sentence structure and mechanics, including relevant references, in A.P.A. style. (30 points)
  4. Methods
    This section must be a complete listing off all relevant information about participants, coding and methods of your study. (30 points)
  5. Literature Search #2
    This literature search will consist of at least 10 research-based scientific articles. They will be summarized on a reference page (A.P.A. style), and all of the literature search terms and the actual computer results will be attached to the reference page. (30 points)
  6. Data analysis
    This section is comprised of the statistical or analytical methods and results of your study. (30 points)
  7. Discussion
    This section is comprised of an effective summary of your study, a re-statement of the thesis sentence (specific aims) and how you achieved or didn't achieve them. It should also include the impact of your results to your audience. (30 points)
  8. Completed Research report
    Each group will submit two copies of the final version of the group's research report, and one copy of the KU Writing Center's evaluation of the document. (200 points)

We have posted several prior examples of research reports for you to consider. Please note that these are not perfect examples! Formatting, spelling, grammatical, & syntax errors occur, and the content of each paper could be enhanced in certain places. They will, nevertheless, help you to get a more clear idea of what your mentor will be expecting in your own final research report.   1. Group oral presentation
    A 15 - 20 minute presentation - in which ALL student members of the research team participate - will take place on OT Research Day. (150 points)
  2. Individual performance
    Each student will be assigned these points in recognition of their contribution to the project as an individual, and of their professionalism in the research setting. (50 points)
