Contextual Analysis of a Historic Figure

 

This assignment is worth 25 points and may be submitted anytime on or before March 5th.

 

For this assignment you will select a figure from history (for our purposes, defined as someone who died prior to the day on which you were born) for whom Disability Rights or the Americans With Disability Act would have been applicable if he or she were alive today. Analyze the contextual environment in which this person lived, according to the four contextual and two environmental domains articulated in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework. For each of these six domains identify one barrier and one facilitator that this person was likely to have experienced. Part of your grade will include an evaluation of your ability to write clearly, and to present information in a logical, coherent manner.

 

President Franklin D. Roosevelt (b.1882 d.1945) is one historic figure that you may not choose as a subject of this assignment, for reasons that will become apparent later in this course.

 

This is an assignment to be completed by each individual student. Please use the template I have placed on-line for writing the assignment. This link will download the template as a generic text file (rich text format), suitable for use by most word processing systems.

 

Submit this assignment BOTH as a paper copy and as an electronic copy (using ANGEL's 'Drop Box' option). Please name your electronic submission and the file you submit using a unique identifier to prevent confusion of similarly-named assignments from different students!

 

Here are a few general comments to consider before you begin to write:

  1. Always provide references for the sources of information you have used in preparing your assignments. Without references, your statement is an opinion since the material can't be verified. You also risk a charge of plagiarism if you use work produced by others without providing a reference. I suggest that you use the APA style for your references (for guidance, consult http://www.apastyle.org/elecref.html or the APA Publication manual, 6th Edition)
  2. Some sources are more robust than others. This means the information presented is verified in some manner by reputable persons or agencies. If you choose a less robust source (Wikipedia, blogs, and websites hosted by interest groups), then you should confirm that information by investigating that topic using more robust sources. These include peer-reviewed publication, professional publications, works written or published by reputable agencies, etc.
  3. Avoid using judgmental language.
  4. Use person-first language.
  5. Always spell- and grammar-check your documents before submitting the final copy!
