"Blood Brothers" assignment

This assignment has multiple parts, and together they will be worth 150 points (25% of your final grade). All parts of this assignment should be submitted together and will be due by 4pm on April 30th.

This assignment endeavors to sharpen your skills of thoughtful critique while using a contextually-based approach. You are to read the entire book, Blood Brothers – Among the soldiers of Ward 57, written by Michael Weisskopf. Your class will be sorted into a series of 3-4 member discussion groups. Each group should plan to meet out of class regularly over the course of the term to discuss how different aspects of the author's context influenced his perceptions, performance, and life satisfaction. As a group, you will be responsible for writing a brief summary for each of the 4 contexts and 2 environment (6 summaries total) and then submitting that set of summaries for a grade. Each member of the group will receive the same grade for these assignments. Part of your grade will include an evaluation of your group’s ability to write clearly (25 pts), and to present information in a logical, coherent manner (25 pts).

Please submit your group's assignments in both a paper version and an electronic version (using ANGEL’s dropbox) using the template I have placed on-line for writing this assignment. The template is a generic text file (rich text format), suitable for use by most word processing systems. Please also name your electronic submission and the file you submit using a unique identifier to prevent confusion of similarly-named assignments from different groups!

Each of your 6 summaries should be thoughtful but brief (aim for less than 3 pages each; 15 pts if the submision is 18 pages or less in length) and should include:

  1. a general overview of that particular context or environment. (2pts)
  2. a discussion of how features of this context or environment influenced Michael Weisskopf’s perspective and performance. (2pts)
  3. discussion of at least 2 performance facilitators relevant to this context/environment. (2pts)
  4. discussion of at least 2 performance barriers relevant to this context/environment. (2pts)
  5. the observation of at least 2 “interventions” or strategies the author describes that increased his performance range in some manner. These may be of his own design, or something implemented by a healthcare or other professional. (2pts)

(6 summaries x 5 elements x 2pts ea = 60 pts)
