Course Description: Overview of the KUMC curriculum; history and philosophy of the occupational therapy profession; structure and function of the national, state, and local professional associations and regulating bodies. Introduction of the Ecology of Human Performance Framework and the occupational therapy process.

Orientation to the Occupational Therapy Profession is about transitioning to a new curriculum and professional life and about providing a foundation for the study of occupational therapy.

Key Questions:

Teaching/Learning Experiences:This didactic experience will combine lecture, seminar format, group exercises, and case presentations to promote learning and application.

Required Texts/Materials:

  1. Dennerll, Jean: Medical Terminology Made Easy, 2nd Edition
  2. Crepeau, E.G., Cohn, & Schell: Willard & Spackman's Occupational Therapy
  3. AOTA: Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process
  4. AOTA, Reference Manual of Official Documents of the American Occupational Therapy Association

Attendance Policy: Attendance at all class sessions is expected as attendance is critical to the student's learning and professional development. If illness or extraordinary life circumstances cause a student to miss a class, the student is required to notify the instructor of the class ahead of time. Extended absence from the classroom and/or experiential learning environment interferes significantly with skill development and knowledge acquisition; therefore, if a student misses more than three classes, the student will receive an F in the course.

Academic Supports and Accomodations: Learning assistance, academic performance enhancement and psychological services at KUMC are free, confidential, and available at Student Counseling & Educational Support Services by calling 913-588-6580 or visiting G116 Student Center.

Any student in this course who needs an accommodation because of a disability in order to complete the course requirements should contact the instructor of the Equal Opportunity/Disability Specialist (913-5880-7813, TDD 913-588-7963) as soon as possible.

Academic and Professional Conduct: Professional behavior and class participation are expected. Professional behavior includes coming to class on time. Points can be deducted from your grade for unprofessional behavior.

The nature of the advanced level of activities in this curriculum must be based upon mutual trust and respect. It is the expectation of the instructors that each student will engage in the learning process respectfully and with highest ethical standards for self and others. Please refer to the School of Allied Health's Student Handbook (Adobe Acrobat .pdf file) for policies regarding academic and non-academic misconduct. Reported acts of academic or non-academic misconduct will be referred to the departmental Academic Integrity and Professional Standards Systems (AIPSS) for investigation and resolution.

Each student and faculty member commits to uphold professional standards through ethical academic participation by agreeing to the following HONOR PLEDGE: "As a member of this academic community, I pledge that I will not tolerate or engage in academic or non-academic misconduct and will uphold the academic integrity and professional standards of this program and my profession."

Student Responsibility: If you do not understand and/or accept the contents and terms of this syllabus, you must notify the instructor in writing within one week after receiving this syllabus.
