Notes:

--MRI sagittal section of head: Point out brain, tongue, epiglottis, bony structures, etc…)

--knee: MRI of the knee (high school football player). Hint: look at the meniscus which should be completely black. There is a meniscal tear. (Point out ACL, musculature, try to help orient students).

--abdomen: (MRI) child comes in after bicycle accident--Look for intrasplenic hematomas; point out liver, ribs, stomach w/gas, aorta, etc…

PATHOLOGY CASES:

--colon cancer (adenocarcinoma=malignant tumor of glands in the colon)

--uterine tumor (leimyoma=benign tumor of smooth muscle). Uterus is split open revealing encapsulated tumor.

One histological section -- a pathologist is trained to determine what the cancer is and whether it’s benign or malignant. (Pap smear slide showing normal cervical cells on the left and precancerous cells on the right--larger nuclei, non-uniform shape and size).
